For my first book review, I’ve chosen a series that has captivated millions of readers and sparked countless debates—the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. You might be wondering, why start with Meyer in the era of Huang? Well, the Twilight series is that one special collection for me that ignited a lifelong passion for reading.
Twilight is a masterpiece that has been somewhat overshadowed by series like The Vampire Diaries, but it never fails to amaze! Twihards still adore it, and here’s why.
Overview of the Series:
The Twilight comprises four main novels—Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn—along with two companion novels and a novella. The story follows the life of Isabella Swan, known as Bella, a teenage girl who moves to the rainy town of Forks, Washington, and falls head-over-heels for Edward Cullen, a mysterious and dazzling 104-year-old vampire. Sounds captivating, doesn’t it? (Confession: Edward was my first book boyfriend!)
The popularity of the books led to a successful film adaptation series, bringing the characters and story to life on the big screen. (No offence, but in my opinion, the books are a thousand times better than the movies!)
Here in this blog, I will review the first book, Twilight, which was published in 2005.
Book 1: Twilight
"And so the lion fell in love with the lamb..." he murmured.
"What a stupid lamb," I sighed.
"What a sick, masochistic lion."
In Twilight, we meet Bella Swan, our protagonist, who moves to Forks to live with her father, Charlie, giving her mother, Renée, space to enjoy her new relationship with her boyfriend.
On Bella's first day of school, she encounters the enigmatic Cullen family, the five adopted children of Dr. Carlisle and Esme Cullen: Edward, Emmett, Alice, Rosalie, and Jasper. Each of them is utterly and flawlessly beautiful. But among them, Bella feels an instant and intense connection with one in particular: Edward Cullen. However, she starts noticing some strange things about him, like the changing colour of his eyes, the coldness of his hands, and his inhuman strength and speed, especially when he saves her from a crash in the parking lot. When she confronts him about it, Edward nonchalantly denies it and tries to avoid her. Then, a dramatic series of events unfolds, and Bella discovers the truth about Edward being a vampire.
But as you might have guessed, that doesn't stop Bella from falling for him, much like prey drawn to the predator's irresistible allure. The book delves into the complicated nature of a human-vampire relationship, loving a person whose first instinct is to kill you.
“About three things, I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him—and I didn’t know how potent that part might be—that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”
Twilight explores the complexities of a forbidden love story. Bella is undeniably attracted to Edward, yet his very nature poses a constant threat. The narrative masterfully builds suspense, leaving you wondering if Edward can resist his thirst for Bella's blood.
With every heartbeat, Bella faces the harrowing question: how far will she go for love? Each decision weighs heavily on her heart, forcing her to confront the risks involved.
Do you know? Edward and Alice possess unique superpowers. Edward can read minds, sensing thoughts, feelings, and intentions around him. Alice, on the other hand, can glimpse potential future events, although these visions are influenced by choices and actions.
A fascinating twist? Bella is immune to Edward's mind-reading abilities, adding an intriguing layer to their relationship.
Towards the end of the novel, a dramatic encounter unfolds, a group of three vampires encounters the Cullen family and Bella. A breeze ruffles Bella’s hair, revealing her human scent to James, one of the new vampires. What happens next when James successfully kidnaps Bella will make your heart jump into your mouth. How will Edward save his only love? (No spoilers here!)
Twilight was my gateway into the world of reading. It introduced me to the thrill of young adult fiction and the allure of supernatural romance. Edward Cullen, with his mysterious aura and deep love for Bella, became my first book boyfriend, setting a high standard for fictional romances.
Bella and Edward’s chemistry is compelling, giving readers butterflies, and the suspense keeps you hooked. There are plenty of moments that will excite you and make you keep turning pages.
Who was your first book boyfriend? I will shortly be back with the review of New Moon. Stay tuned!
